Checking your Transmission Fluid

It is important to know when and how to check your transmission fluid to keep your transmission functioning properly. Transmission fluid should base on your car manufactures specs. If you are in a hot environment or the transmission has a heavy load then we recommend changing it sooner or at least getting it checked. For optimal performance in automatic transmissions, it is suggested to check your transmission fluid regularly. Transmission fluid that is too low or way over due for a change can cause problems like difficulty in switching gears. The goal is to get in a habit of checking regularly before it gets dangerously low causing your transmission to have a problem. Note that DIY checks are only suggested for automatic transmissions. You cannot check the levels on a manual transmission yourself. If you have a manual transmission, it should only be serviced by a professional transmission mechanic. How to check the condition of your transmission fluid? First, you look for a dipstick similar to the one for your car oil, except the dipstick will be labeled “transmission fluid.” Front-wheel drive has the dipstick coming from the transaxle. Rear-wheel drive will have the dipstick located to the rear of the engine. Next, get your car on a level surface in neutral, or some people prefer parking it with the emergency brake on. Check your instruction manual to verify if your car should be started or turned off, but most suggest to have the engine running because the fluid should be warm. When checking the transmission oil, you should examine the color, consistency, and scent. New transmission fluid is red, and normal is dark red. If it is darker and brown in color it is time to change it. If it is dark, brownish black, the fluid is burnt and ineffective. Consistency should be clean and have no debris in it. The oil should have no odor when you smell it. How to check the transmission fluid levels? If the fluid line is near the middle of the dipstick it is an okay level, whereas if it below the middle consider adding more fluid. If the line is near the end of the dipstick, it is too low. Use a fennel to add more fluid. Double check if it is the correct kind of transmission fluid for your vehicles before you do it. Also be careful to not add too much. Incorrect fluid or too much can have serious affects to your transmission, such as destabilizing your transmission. Too low of fluid can also indicate that there is a leak with your transmission, so if it is too low don’t hesitate to bring in your car to get an initial check. Transmission fluid is a slippery liquid that acts as a lubricant for all the moving parts inside of your transmission. In an automatic transmission, this fluid also works as a coolant and an adherent fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission.

A CVT is an automatic transmission system which offers a smoother driving experience by optimizing the process of change. The transition between gears becomes almost smooth by the design of the CVT, and the effect of "shift-shock" is greatly lessened. CVTs also provide better fuel economy and power consumption, as it allows the engine to operate at optimum power, regardless of how fast the vehicle travels. The word "continuously variable" implies that the CVT allows for a constant change within the engine, instead of the actual gear "stages," so that there is no apparent shift between gears. Different types of CVTs Many types of continuously variable transmissions are available, many of which are now available from major automakers. Pulley-Based The most common CVT uses a complex pulley system to provide smooth gear changes instead of gears. If you’re having issues with your cvt give us a call we offer a free initial check out. 5 Tips that will help you save money at a transmission shop! 1. Today's technology is great! When it comes to finding a good transmission shop, it's right at your fingertips. Checking the reviews of a shop on the internet is the first step to saving you money. This may sound silly but, good shops work hard for good reviews. 2. Resist the impulse to call a transmission shop and ask for a "worst case scenario", or a "ball park". Worst case is buying something you don't need. There are a lot of shops that will just throw a number out, all too quickly, hoping to land the job. 3. Keep in mind that a transmission has 300-400 moving parts. When someone says they can rebuild your transmission for a certain dollar figure, how many of those parts are they going to replace? Everyone is convinced that rebuilding a transmission means you take out ALL the old parts and put new ones back in their place. That's simply not the case. 4. It’s easy to make up prices over the phone, but a professional shop will always ask you to bring the vehicle in for a proper diagnosis. Doesn't it make more sense to base your decision on a thorough diagnosis and accurate pricing information, rather than some sort of random guess work by someone that hasn't even looked at your vehicle? 5. Honest shops make sure they only sell what is needed and do a good job for you. An honest shop will educate the customer, rather than trying to play them for a sucker. If you want to get the best price, seek out a professional transmission shop like Eagle Transmission. Serving Dallas Area and Ardmore Ok Eagle Transmission Shop
