 Clutch Replacement

Do you have a manual transmission in your car? If this is the case, you also have a clutch assembly which enables your car to shift smoothly through the gears. As the pressure plate or clutch disc begins to wear you may notice slippage, which will cause your car’s engine to rev-up. You may notice that the transmission is hard to shift between gears. These maybe an early warning signs or indication that the clutch assembly is beginning to fail. There is a possibility you may only need a simple clutch adjustment. Replacing a clutch assembly can vary a great deal in price. Like all things in the transmission industry, you usually get what you pay for, the clutch assembly is no different. The price on a clutch repair goes hand in hand with the quality of clutch assembly that’s installed. Beware of cheap clutches because they do not last very long!

Why The Clutch Is There The job of the clutch is to connect the engine of your car to its transmission. Since your engine is always running, even if your wheels are not turning, you have to be able to connect and separate your clutch. Although there are many more clutches in automatic transmissions, they still have the same basic parts doing the same basic work. What A Clutch Is The clutch connects via the flywheel of the engine to your engine. The clutch disk is forced against the flywheel by powerful springs when the clutch is engaged (i.e. no pressure on the clutch pedal). Friction between the two parts forms a solid connection and the movement of the engine is passed on to the transmission. Depressing the pedal of the clutch causes the springs against the flywheel holding the clutch disk to relax. The clutch disk loses contact and stops spinning without being held in place, breaking the linkage.

The Clutch's Normal Lifespan Like most parts of your car, the clutch is designed for maximum durability. However, the friction between the flywheel and the clutch plate will wear down the plate over time. If the power train is regularly subjected to heavy strains (e.g. in a truck carrying heavy loads), the clutch can wear out in as few as 35,000 miles. Almost all clutches in normal operation should be good for at least 50,000 miles. New cars perform even better, and today there are relatively common clutches that are good for 80,000 or even 100,000 miles. Consult your owner's manual to find recommendations for clutch lifespan from your manufacturer.
